Building: manifold.observer

A source enters.
The conditions change.
Something else appears.
txtManifold.observer is an experimental audiovisual instrument built around transformation and emergence.
Users manipulate a set of inputs and modifiers that reshape three-dimensional forms in real time. Small changes can produce subtle shifts, pulsing waves, or entirely new structures.
There is no intended outcome and no correct way to use it. The piece is designed for exploration rather than completion.
Building the System
I designed and built the project as a browser-based real-time graphics experiment using React, TypeScript, and Three.js.
The interface controls a procedural visual system rather than a collection of predefined animations. User input is translated into changes in geometry, material, motion, lighting, and reaction to sound, allowing the output to remain responsive and unpredictable.
The primary challenge was balancing complexity with immediacy: creating enough variation for the system to feel alive while keeping the interaction understandable and performant in the browser.
The project involved:
- Designing a generative system whose variables remain visually coherent across a wide range of combinations
- Managing continuous animation and user input within a real-time Three.js scene
- Connecting visual transformations with an audio source
- Building an interface that exposes meaningful control without explaining the experience too completely
- Refining performance, composition, camera behavior, and interaction until the system felt tactile and interesting
An Open-Ended Object
I have always been interested in shapes, colors, geometry, language, and the places where those systems overlap.
Manifold.observer grew from that interest. It is less a visualization of something than a space in which relationships can be observed as they form, distort, and disappear.
